Brief discharge versus a continuous leak
A reduced-pressure assembly can release water through its relief opening as part of its protective function. A brief discharge may occur during a pressure change. Continuous dripping or a heavy flow is different and should be evaluated before it causes water damage or service interruption.
Common conditions a technician may investigate
- Debris or mineral buildup preventing an internal check from sealing.
- A worn or damaged relief-valve seat, seal or internal component.
- Supply- or downstream-pressure fluctuation.
- Water hammer, excessive backpressure or freeze damage.
- Corrosion, physical damage or an assembly that has reached the end of practical repair.
What to do right now
- Keep people and stored items away from the discharge area.
- Do not plug, cap or block an RP relief opening.
- Photograph the full assembly and where the water is coming from.
- Record whether the leak is constant, intermittent or tied to irrigation or building water use.
- Find the manufacturer, model, size and any recent test report.
- Call promptly if discharge is heavy, threatens electrical equipment or is causing property damage.
Does a leaking backflow preventer need replacement?
Not always. Cleaning or replacing suitable internal parts may restore some assemblies. The correct decision depends on the test results, assembly model, parts availability, condition and the requirements of the water provider. After repair, the assembly may need backflow testing and documentation.
